Today was the official start of our 2nd grade year. We are doing a lot of subjects and I didn’t know exactly how long our school day would run. Last year we averaged between 1 1/2 and 2 hours. Occasionally up to 2 1/2 hours, but that was often on days where attitudes created more conflict than necessary to get the day’s work accomplished.

2nd-ish! I’m sure most of you homeschool mommas understand!

We started slightly later than I wanted and skipped a couple small things that we will do tomorrow instead for one reason or another, but overall I am happy with how our day went and we were done in about 2 1/2 hours which included a pretty long read aloud as well as second read aloud and a math video. We covered bible, handwriting, reading comprehension, grammar, literature, spelling, history, geography, and math. It’s amazing to me how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time when you are in a one-on-one situation and don’t have to worry about the dynamics of classroom management.

All in all it was a pretty good first day although we had a couple little bumps in the road just getting back into our normal routine. Sometimes I regret even taking off August because we really do run best with routines in place even if we don’t always follow them 100 percent. There’s a natural rhythm to the day and expectations are understood which leads to less conflict and a more peaceful household.

So how did your first day of school go this year? I hope it was awesome and I wish all of you a peaceful and productive school year!

Thanks for reading!
